Getting your a copy of your social insurance number or card
A Social Insurance Number (SIN) is like your key to government benefits. You can get it online, by mail, or in person at a Service Canada Center. Keep it safe, don't lose it, and report fraud if it happens.
To Get a SIN there are three options:
Option A - Online
- Provide a birth certificate or other primary ID.
- Give a secondary ID like a passport or driver's license.
- If names don't match, show a legal name change document.
- Fill out the online form NAS2120 if it's your first SIN, you need a confirmation, or you want to make changes
Option B - By Mail
- Fill out the same form.
- Include the same documents.
- Send it to Service Canada in Bathurst, NB.
Option C - In Person
- Get the necessary documents.
- Find your nearest Service Canada Center and check their schedule.
- Complete the online appointment request.
- If everything is in order, you'll get your SIN during your visit.
Getting a SIN is free. If you apply online, you'll get a confirmation letter in about 10 business days. By mail, it takes around 20 business days.
If the letter is delayed by 5-10 days or more, you can ask the NAS program for information.
