Why travel by public transport?

What are the public transit options?

Several means of transportation are available in Canada. For example, in Montreal, the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) offers the possibility of traveling by bus, metro, exo train, collective taxi.

Several bus routes serve the Island of Montreal. Buses run day and night. Express buses offer faster service.

The Metro is another quick way to get around much of the city of Montreal, and it is not affected by the weather. It has four lines: orange line, blue line, green line, and yellow line.

The EXO trains cover the greater Montreal area and include six train lines. These different lines serve:

  • Vaudreuil-Hudson
  • Two-Mountains
  • St. Jérôme
  • Mascouche
  • Mont-Saint-Hilaire
  • Candiac

The collective taxi (taxibus) is a special public transport service. It covers routesthat are not served by the regular public transit service.

To use this means of transport, you will have to make a reservation about an hour before and share the journey with other people.

How much does a ticket cost?

Several choices are available to you: a one-day pass; a three-day pass; a monthly pass, etc.

Public transport costs are affordable. In Summer 2023, the cost of a single pass was $3.75 (regular fare) and the monthly pass was $97.00 (regular fare). However, fares are higher for the EXO trains: a pass allowing travel between Montreal and Saint-Jérôme is $9.25 and the "all modes ABCD” monthly pass is $263.00.

  • Once a ticket has been validated, it is valid for 120 minutes. It allows you to make a connection or two; for example, to go from one metro line or bus to another without repaying the fare.
  • The amount of a passage is calculated according to the distance travelled, so it is essential to make sure that you have the right ticket depending on where you want to go.

If you travel often by public transit, the easiest way to pay for your fare is to purchase the OPUS card for $6.00. Then, all you have to do is load the desired transport tickets onto your card.

You can load and reload your card at kiosks in metro stations or online.

Once your OPUS card has been loaded, all you must do is swipe your card on the payment terminal reader to validate your passage.

Where can I get a ticket?

As a rule of thumb, passes can be purchased at metro or train stations.

For bus fares, it is often possible to pay as you board the bus, but you must have the exact amount, as the bus driver will not give you change.

How do I pay my trips?

In general, it is possible to pay cash for your tickets.

To travel by train, you will need to obtain a ‘train” ticket. However, if you want to combine methods, for example the train and the metro, you will need to buy a “TRAM” ticket. You can load these types of tickets onto an OPUS card, or you can get a Solo card and load between one and six tickets.

It is not possible to pay for the collective taxi in cash. You must use the OPUS card to pay for this mode of transportation
